I’m James Downard, the Reform UK candidate for Carisbrooke and Gunville.
I grew up on the Isle of Wight and have lived in the ward of Carisbrooke & Gunville for 14 years,
attending Hunnyhill Primary School, Node Hill Middle School, and Carisbrooke College. For 4
years I also helped out at a local club, teaching safe use of airsoft equipment to children. I work at a
local holiday park, and I am known for my conscientious commitment to service.
I am passionate about improving local amenities so everyone can enjoy living here, supporting
small businesses, and ensuring every resident has a voice and someone who will listen. I am excited
to bring positive change to Carisbrooke & Gunville, to help improve my local area, and to give back
to my community.
Speaking to residents on the doors, one of the concerns that has been raised is flooding; I will push
for the river at the back of Ash Lane to be cleared of debris and, if feasible, widened to improve
flow. I would like a review of the flood management plan and, if possible, help strengthen it.
Another concern shared by myself and many is a number of highway-pedestrian issues we have
locally. I believe that the mini-roundabout at Carisbrooke rd/Cedar Hill/High Street should be
reviewed, and a public consultation set up to consider having a crossing point installed nearby, as
this will help school children cross safely.
I would further like to encourage community events within the ward, to give all local people, but
especially younger people, fun and meaningful activities to participate in. This will help foster a
deeper sense of community cohesion and improve quality of life for all.
