Local priorities, not party politics

I have sat on the Town Council both in opposition, and as Mayor, and have been able to deliver projects in both positions, by being willing to work with members of all parties, in the interest of residents. Last year I set about building a group of like minded, progressive individuals, Together for Sandown, those that were willing to put aside politics and work together for Sandown, we now want to take that local focus to County Hall.

Make the case for fair funding, and partnership working

The relationship between the IOW council and the town and parish councils varies hugely across the Island, I can evidence that Sandown has been overlooked, and treated unfairly from a County level. I will push for more equal treatment across the Island, driven by need, not by politics.

Fighting to keep our local schools open

While I accept the difficult decision that must be taken to close a number of schools across the island, this must be a fair, and transparent process. I believe we must prioritise maintaining primary schools in urban areas where the majority of children live within walking distance of the school.

Protect our green spaces and environment

It is absolutely key to protect our local environment, whether that be our incredible beaches, or the surrounding countryside. This means challenging those that put these at risk. Whether it be inappropriate development, or sewage discharges. The current Southern Water recycling plant in particular needs detailed scrutiny and a councillor who will hold them to account.

Support the next generation

As a Sandown Town Councillor I was key in the creation of the Bay Youth Project, which over several years has gone from strength to strength, reducing youth ASB by more than 50% and this year seeing the opening of the dedicated youth centre at the Town Hall after securing over £3 million in grant funding. I will continue to support and champion our young people wherever I can.

Take direct action on derelict buildings

Over the last year increasingly Sandown Town Council has taken more direct action to tackle some of our most pressing derelict sites. We have employed S215 notices enforcing properties to be cleaned up, we have recently purchased part of the Ocean Hotel site, and are looking to take over the Pier Street toilets. Compulsory purchase orders are another tool available, but they are only available to the Isle of Wight Council, not the Town Council, and so we need support at a County level.

Not afraid to get stuck in and do the work

Whether that is bringing forward proposals to purchase the strip of land at the front of the Ocean Hotel to helping write the grant application for a quarter of a million pounds and attending all the project  and site meetings for delivery of the 2G playzone. Through to repairing and painting the playground or the seafront railings, I have a record of working for the town, which I hope to continue at County Hall with your support.
